The building, named after its architect Martin Gropius, was opened in 1881 as a Royal Crafts Museum. The building, which was severely damaged and ruined during World War II, was taken under protection by the initiatives of German architect Walter Gropius. After years of reconstruction work, the building opened for the second time in 1981 with the great Schinkel exhibition it hosted.
